Michael Jones

Michael’s varied and productive career thus far has included roles with numerous opera companies and oratorio work with several outstanding orchestras. His credits include: the Piedmont Opera Theater, the Orlando Opera, Opera Carolina, the Central Florida Lyric Opera, the Sarasota Opera, and the Utah Festival Opera. Oratorios have been sung with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orlando Chamber Orchestra, and with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.

Vocal training for Michael began while studying with John Thomasson at Shorter College, beginning his sophomore year in high school. During that same year Michael sang a solo on the stage of Carnegie Hall in New York City. Vocal training continued while attending the North Carolina School of the Arts, studying under Marilyn Taylor. While at college, Michael auditioned for and became a member of the NCSA Chamber Choir, which began his love for vocal chamber music.

After graduation with a major in vocal performance, Michael participated in youth apprenticeship programs with the following prominent opera companies: the Orlando Opera Company, the Utah Festival Opera, and the Sarasota Opera. Upon completion of the apprentice programs, he was invited back to each of the companies to sing both supporting and lead roles.

Michael has sung numerous roles at the various companies, but a few of his favorites include: covering the role of Pong in Turandot, covering the role of Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Captain Albert Lenox in Secret Garden, Elder Gleaton in Susannah, Reverend Samuel Parris in The Crucible, and the Caliph in Kismet. He also takes particular enjoyment in the oratorio pieces that has sung. Some upcoming roles include: Nicias in the opera Thais, by Massenet and Marius in les Miserables.

There has been little time for many hobbies, but Michael does enjoy running and plays a mean set of tennis. He has enjoyed meeting people and visiting the places that his singing has taken him. He feels fortunate to have a family that has offered such loving support to help bring him to this point in his career. Michael is truly looking forward to joining the ranks of Cantus this year.

On a lighter note, Michael is looking with great anticipation (??) to witnessing his first Minnesota winter. He is sure that this is going to be a drastic change for an ol’ Southern Boy!!
