Deep River is sixth strong recording from the 11 men of Cantus, a professional, vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to exalting the human spirit through the performance of innovative and engaging musical programs. There are 16 Spirituals and Gospel tunes here, as powerful and spirited as we have ever heard them sung. From the first cut, "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel," to "King Jesus Is A-Listening," "This Ol' Hammer" and the title tune to "My Lord, What a Mornin'," "In His Care-O" and "In Dat Great Gittin' Up Mornin'," this is marvelous, deep-bassed revival meeting stuff. And the softer tunes, like "There Is A Balm in Gilead," remind us how much we'd rather hear this than "There is a bomb in." Cantus keeps getting better with every CD, and we like what they're doing!
